Pygmy Hippo Conservation
Pygmy hippos are classified as Endangered (2005 IUCN Red List) and current population estimates put the number of individuals at less than 3,000 in the wild. These are confined to four African countries; Liberia, Ivory Coast, Sierra Leone and Guinea. Due to the prevalence of war in the countries in which they reside, we know very little about their abundance and distribution.

In 2006, Action for the Wild pledged a donation of $1000 or £536 to support a project that will use remote video to record hippos around the Sapo National Park, Liberia, and in adjacent agricultural fields where they are reported to cause damage. By using remote cameras and interviews with residents, the project coordinators will work to estimate hippo abundance in Sapo National Park, believed to be one of their last strongholds. Pygmy hippos are also reported to be hunted for bushmeat around the park. This project will determine how extensive this is and what likely impact this has on the pygmy hippo population.

Action for the Wild’s donation is thus crucial to helping scientists estimate hippo abundance and the conflict between humans and hippos in and around Sapo National Park.
