EAZA 2006-2007 Madagascar Campaign
Madagascar is the fourth largest island in the world. It is amazingly diverse in terms of its species and as a result is often called the 8th Continent.

There are a vast variety of species that live on the island that do not occur anywhere else in the world, including lemurs and fossas.

In 2006/2007 Colchester Zoo participated in the 6th annual conservation campaign of the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA), the Madagascar campaign.

The main targets of the campaign were:
1) to raise public awareness promoting the idea of biodiversity through the unique flora and fauna found in Madagascar
2) to collect funds for conservation projects on the island (fundraising goal: €500.000); to be divided between 20 projects, or more depending on amount received
3) to promote eco-tourism to Madagascar; this can be a viable way to bolster their economy whilst ensuring that the unique habitats and wildlife that visitors come to view are afforded greater protection by being recognised as an asset
4) to promote the concept of twinning between EAZA members and National Parks and other protected areas.

The aim of this campaign is very much about relationships between communities and their environment, between EAZA institutions and protected areas in Madagascar and between peoples of Madagascar and Europe. It is in the forging of strong relationships that Madagascar will flourish.

The campaign officially started on the 4th October 2006 and ran until the 30th September 2007. Despite running for just a year, it is hoped that the campaign will stimulate long term interest in the island.

Here at Colchester Zoo, we donated €10,000 or £7,000 for this campaign. We organised a number of Madagascar activities for the year, including Madagascar-orientated theatre shows, with our trained ring tailed lemur and Madagascar cockroaches. We are also ran a Madagascar-orientated fundraising week in the February half term, with events such as lemur and fossa feeds, an activity stall, a zoo trail and a special outdoor event on the lawn.
