Hornbill Research Foundation Update 2009
Posted: 08/02/2010
Action for the Wild has been supporting the Hornbill Research Foundation since 2002, and donates $450 annually to support three hornbill families in Thailand. The sponsored families are rhinoceros, helmeted and bushy-crested hornbill species. Our families nest around the Budo Mountain area, which is part of the Budo-Sungai Padu National Park. Action for the Wild has already sent over its annual donation towards the project for 2010.

In 2009, our helmeted hornbill family were not successful at breeding due to human disturbance. Data was still collected on their diet throughout the nesting period, it was noticed that the diet of the family until the female emerged comprised entirely of fruits (100%); mainly fig. Our bushy-crested hornbill family successfully fledged 2 chicks during the nesting season in 2009. It took approximately 72 days from the time the female sealed the nest to the chicks fledging. Their diet was almost entirely made up of fruits (95.5%) apart from a few animals (4.5%). The majority of the ripe fruit was non-fig and this was delivered to the nest by the male and 5 helpers. Our rhinoceros hornbill family successfully fledged one chick during their nesting season. This took approximately 78 days from sealing to fledging. Their diet throughout the nesting period comprised of fruits (97.3%); the majority of ripe fruits delivered by the male were figs.

For 2010 the project will continue to monitor our hornbill families. They will also continue to promote hornbill conservation and train villagers as nature guides, so they can earn an income in a more sustainable way.
