Funding

All conservation activities carried out by Colchester Zoo are funded through the Action for the Wild charitable trust.

Aims and Objectives:

Colchester Zoo aims to provide financial assistance and technical advice to overseas in situ projects in order to support the conservation of endangered species and their habitats.

Action for the Wild aims to provide habitat and survival aids for native species and support of nature projects nationally. In co-operation with other bodies, it aims to establish protected areas, implement habitat management and be involved in breeding and translocation of threatened flora and fauna.

Action for the Wild aims to raise awareness and respect for nature through formal and informal education programmes. It also aims to encourage and support scientific and quantitative research from which conservation and animal welfare benefits can accrue.

Priority projects include:

  • Wildlife conservation projects in species-range countries
  • Habitat / prey protection projects in species-range countries
  • Education activities in species-range countries
  • Scientific techniques for species conservation monitoring
  • Human / wildlife conflict resolution

What Action for the Wild funds?

All applications for conservation project funding will be assessed on their own merit, taking into consideration the principle species or habitat involved and the in situ work that is to be carried out. As Colchester Zoo evolves, Action for the Wild intends to assess in situ conservation projects and provide funding to projects, with respect to the Zoo's major exhibits and species that Colchester Zoo has in its collection. Please check the zoo website for the species Colchester Zoo holds in its collection before applying.

Action for the Wild does not support individual trips or student projects. We only support conservation projects and campaigns, please check this website for a full list of  projects we currently support.

Deadline:

The Action for the Wild commitee meets every year in January to discuss project support for that year, We request that all project applications are received by the 30th December of each year. This is so they can be reviewed and taken to the meeting to decide on that year's support. Action for the Wild allocates funding for each financial year. All projects will be informed of their outcome once the meeting has taken place.

Please note only applications of £5,000 or under will be considered
