This year, Colchester Zoo’s Action for the Wild has donated £10,000 to the Elephant Orphanage Project in Zambia. Our funds provide care for the elephants as they undergo their rehabilitation process and also cover the wages for one of the elephant caregivers who helps with the rehabilitations care process.

In October, two orphans were been transferred from the nursery to the release facility. Olimba was a resident of the Lusaka Elephant Nursery for three years since her rescue at 1 year old. Like all of the elephants the Elephant Orphanage Project rescue, she suffered a traumatic start to life when she lost here mother and herd through poaching. As did Chip, who’s stay at the nursery was much shorter. He was rescued when he was almost 2 years old and has now moved, just 1 year after his arrival.
