Every visit to Colchester Zoo helps us to provide vital funds to conservation projects worldwide through our charity, Action for the Wild.
Below are the projects that we are supporting over the next year, including two new conservation projects, GhostFishing UK and the Galapagos Conservation Trust.

A.E.E.C.L Lemur Conservation – Madagascar
Support started in 2004 – £21,772.90 donated to date.
AEECL focusses on advancing the understanding and conservation of Madagascar’s Lemurs through scientific research, captive propagation, and protection of their natural habitats.
This year, Action for the Wild will be making a contribution of €2,000 to help advance the understanding and conservation of Madagascar’s lemurs through scientific research, captive propagation, and protection of their natural habitats.
EAZA Elephant TAG EEHV Fund – Europe
Support started in 2010 – £2,474.74 donated to date.
Elephant herpes virus is a devastating infectious disease posing a significant threat to the long term conservation of Asian Elephants. Via research projects through EAZA, the aim is to provide better understanding and combat this virus.
This year, Action for the Wild will be making a contribution of £906.70 to help look at transmission of the Elephant Endotheliotropic Herpes Virus (EEHV) in Elephant herds and investigate the possibility of developing a vaccine to protect against it.
Elephant Orphanage Project (EOP) – Zambia
Support started in 2010 – £68,678 donated to date.
The orphanage strives to rescue, rehabilitate and release orphaned Elephants back into the wild.
This year, Action for the Wild will be making a contribution of £10,000 to support Elephant costs and also to support the Deputy Head Elephant Keeper, Aaron.
Fisher’s Estuarine Moth Breeding Programme – United Kingdom
Support started in 2008
The Fisher’s Estuarine Moth is a rare and highly threatened species primarily found on Skipper’s Island off the North Essex Coast. The breeding programme receives technical assistance via an off-show area to promote the captive breeding of this species.
Free the Bears – Laos
Support started in 2011 – £55,750 donated to date.
The mission of Free the Bears is to protect, preserve and enrich the lives of Bears throughout the world.
This year, Action for the Wild will be making a contribution of £7,500 to this important project; £5,000 towards ultra low temperature freezer and £2,500 towards costs of employing a Lao veterinarian for laboratory and research work.
NEW PROJECT
Galapagos Conservation Trust – South America
The Trust works with scientists, authorities, NGOs and local communities to tackle key threats to the unique biodiversity of Galapagos, including invasive species, pollution, climate change and overfishing.
This year, Action for the Wild will be making a contribution of £373.62.
NEW PROJECT
GhostFishing UK – United Kingdom
The purpose of this team of specialised volunteer divers is to remove, where possible, lethal entanglement hazards to marine life and scuba divers from the marine environment.
This year, Action for the Wild will be making a contribution of £613.62.
Komodo Survival Programme – Indonesia
Support started in 2005 – £14,731.73 donated to date.
The Komodo Survival Program aims to protect and monitor Komodo Dragons and their habitat with the involvement of the local community.
This year, Action for the Wild will be making a contribution of €1,500 to help the Komodo Survival Program protect and monitor Komodo Dragons and their habitat with the involvement of the local community.
LWIRO Primate Rehabilitation Centre – Democratic Republic of Congo
Support started in 2013 – £39,602.56 donated to date.
The Centre de Rehabilitation des Primates de Lwiro (CRPL) works to care for and rehabilitate orphaned primates.
This year, Action for the Wild will be making a contribution of £4,858.50 to help continue providing the best care possible to victims of poaching and pet trade in DRC.
Orangutan Foundation – Borneo
Support started in 2010 – £54,500 donated to date.
The world’s foremost Orangutan conservation organisation focussed on saving Asia’s endangered great ape by protecting their forest habitat, working with local communities and promoting research and education.
This year, Action for the Wild will be making a contribution of £7,500 to this conservation project.
The Red Panda Network – Nepal
Support started in 2014 – £2,271.62 donated to date.
The network is committed to the conservation of wild Red Pandas and their habitat through the education and empowerment of local communities.
This year, Action for the Wild will be making a contribution of €250.
Save the Rhino – South Africa
Support started in 2005 – £98,896.79 donated to date.
This project strives to uphold the security of Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Rhino populations by maintaining a viable perimeter fence and to increase the effectiveness of anti-poaching and monitoring activities, in order to ensure the continued and increased competence of field rangers in the reserve.
This year, Action for the Wild will be making a contribution of £7,068.04 to help protect Rhinos.
UmPhafa Private Nature Area – South Africa
Support started in 2005 – £3,364,091.60 donated to date.
Action for the Wild’s own 6,000ha reserve in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, working to restore the natural habitat and increase the flora and fauna populations of this important ecosystem.
This year, Action for the Wild will be making a contribution of £479,000 to cover the running cost of the reserve for the year.
Vulpro – South Africa
Support started in 2015 – £25,287.92 donated to date.
Through rehabilitation, research and education, and a captive breeding programme, VulPro aims to save Africa’s wild Vulture population.
In 2023, we will be making an additional contribution of £4,994.22 to this conservation project to help support researcher costs to monitor breeding sites of the critically endangered tree nesting African white-backed vulture.
